wins Gold Medal for England

Liz Godfree, of Ashbourne Running Club and also a long standing member of Derwent Valley Orienteers, has won a Gold Medal for the England Team in the Interland Orienteering Competition in Holland.  

The competition was a five sided match between teams from Holland, Nordrhein/Westfalen (NW Germany),
Wallonia (French speaking Belgium) and Flanders (Flemish speaking Belgium) and England.  A team of 42 English competitors, men and women, ranging in age from 14 to 60+ navigated courses according to age and
gender in the forest around a Dutch army base.  

A network of paths crossed open grassland and runnable forest areas before disappearing into vast empty areas of sand, well used by army tanks.  Liz completed her 4km cross country course (W60+) in 28.25 minutes, taking the gold medal ahead of the English silver medallist.  

Fellow Derwent Valley Orienteer member Paul Addison took bronze in the M50 category.  

Thanks to other good results England retained the trophy.
