Useful Info for New Members

Membership Form attached below:

Aim: To develop and maintain for its Members, an interest in running in a friendly, informal and inclusive atmosphere.

Overview and Benefits: Members vary in running speed, running endurance and age. Club membership is approx 100, divided almost equally, male and female. The Club holds an Annual General Meeting at which the Committee is elected (comprising the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare and Membership officers and six other members).

Running Kit and access to physio available and running tips and info via ARC webpage. Discount at local specialist sports shops. Discount of £1-2 on entry to most organised races.

Club Night Run Every Tuesday 7pm: From the Ashbourne Leisure Centre. The run is about 6 miles, taking about an hour including stops to let everybody get back together. Faster runners can therefore run hard and slower members run steadily, whilst still keeping in a club group.

Summer (April-Oct) and Winter (Nov-Mar): In Winter the run is around Ashbourne and Mayfield under street lights. In Summer the run takes maximum advantage of the local countryside, both on and off road. Routes are emailed in advance.

‘Special’ Tuesday Runs: The Club tries to have a ‘special’ Tuesday night run once a month to add variety. In the Winter, the run has to be around Ashbourne and include hill training, speed reps and the Bleep test. In Summer, the Club arranges with a pub in one of the local villages and runs from there – with the option for members to stay and eat afterwards.

Beginner Sessions

Beginner?  Ashbourne Running Club also put on the very popular 10-week Introduction to Running sessions, usually starting early in July from the Leisure Centre.

All commence at 6pm and are FREE - so come to all or as many as you can make!  They will be led by a Leader in Running Fitness, Howard Winbow, plus other members from the club.  So if you are new to running and want some guidance on how to train, warm up and stretch off, the correct running gear or are just trying to step up to slightly longer endurance, then these walk-jog-run sessions are for you.  All are welcome and accommodated as the sessions will be tailored to suit individual abilities in an inclusive atmosphere.  Over 100 participants have come through the course over the last 2 years with many going on to complete the Ashbourne 3.5 mile Fun Run and continue to enjoy running on a regular basis and also progress to joining the club.

Events, Activities and Information: The Club organises and/or takes part in:

  • Wilfs Run – Jan, a challenge race in pairs
  • ‘Club Championship’ via participation in local races, choice of 7 from 12
  • Summer and Winter ‘fun’ orienteering events
  • 5 ‘out of town’ summer Tuesday runs
  • Footpath Relay – July, team of 20
  • Highland Gathering Hill Race – July
  • Ashbourne Half Marathon and Fun Run – September
  • Club Handicap Race – Aug, fastest starts last!
  • Dovedale Dash – Nov
  • ‘Watchless’ runs – judge your speed over a course without the clock!
  • Winter ‘Treasure Hunt’

On the social front, the Club usually holds a pub lunch after the Dove Dale Dash, a BBQ after the Summer orienteering event and a Christmas Dinner, at which the Chairman awards trophies for the male and female runners of the year, the sports person of the year and the most improved male and female runners. Throughout the year a ‘Diary of Events’ is issued to keep members updated on activities

‘Try out the Club’: Interested runners are encouraged to come along to the Club and run a few times - without any obligation - to see if the Club is what they want. Then, if they are satisfied, they will be asked to complete a Membership Application (also available on the club notice board in the Leisure Centre) and pay the very modest fee outlined in the current membership form below.

(Insurance - the Club is affiliated to England Athletics. However, runners are not insured until they sign to become Club Members so until then run at their own risk)
